Here's a new discussion thread for Hockey in general. The old one was big enough.

Today the Vancouver Canucks met with the media and Luongo stated he would waive his no-trade contract if asked to.

Now the question becomes, who wants Luongo?

He just turned 33, his cap hit of $5,333,333 runs through the 2021-22 season (CapGeek).

The contract is a death blow.  A buyout is cheap for the latter years, but the payback for the early cap circumvention is big.  Big cap hits for the last few years if bought out.  He can retire to remove the payback in the cap hit but he might choose to not do so if his financial fortunes are not so rosy.

Toronto will likely be interested. Tampa might be as well, though they'd likely need to move a big salary back. I'd also include Columbus, Florida, Chicago, Minnesota and Edmonton.

Not saying they'll willingly move him to all those places or that he'd go there, just who likely could be a fit.

Florida is out.  The have Markstrom in the wings.  Not likely Minny either.  I can see CBus, Chicago, Tampa and Toronto as the biggest suitors.

Minnesota - Backstrom will be 35 next year and also a free agent after next season. Not saying likely, just a possibility because of that and the fact that they have trouble getting guys there.

Florida could always use Markstrom as trade bait to get elite 1st line forward they've been looking for.

Unproven goalies don't get a big return.  Plus Tallon isn't that good.  He was realistically burned in trading Booth who was the guy closest to elite of the immediately previous incarnation of the team.

Ironically, young Luongo breaks that trend twice, as he was a centerpiece in big deals when younger.

Generically, GMs have learned since then.  Those kind of fiascoes have leaguewide repercussions.  GMs aren't doing the first round pick swap after the thing of Lombo losing the Lecavalier pick.  Varlamov is probably going to be another exception, but he was much more "proven" than Markstrom.

Chicago Blackhawks would be interesting to say the least given their rivalry with the Vancouver Canucks the past few seasons;  a la Maxime Talbot.  Doubt it would happen with the Blackhawks' salary constraints.

You can bet that Brian Burke will be pressed to find a starting goalie with Jonas Gustafsson entering unrestricted free agency and James Reimer's poor play down the stretch.  Reimer is big too, maybe learning from Roberto Luongo would be good for him.

Although with all the media attention and whatnot he's been getting with the Canucks, I'm not sure moving the centre of the hockey universe would exactly be ideal for Luongo.

Hunter is what he is, someone has to hire him. I cant believe Hunter alone gets to make the call to leave the great 8 on the bench.

Since he took over, they actually have been worse and only made the playoffs because of how bad their division is.

Keep in mind, this is a team that has point totals of 107, 121 and 108 over the last 3 seasons.

They got a poor start with Boudreau who is in love with slow vet dmen.  Hunter did finally figure that Carlson was his best defensive dman.  The pairings look better and so does the TOI, but there are still chips in the armor there.  The style of play for the team personnel is ludicrous.  Going defensive because they didn't do it offensively was not the way to go.  Modifying the offensive system would have been the best course; instead, Hunter turned the system on its head.

12-9-1 under Boudreau. Averages to 93.1 points over 82 games.

30-23-7 under Hunter. Averages 91.5 points over 82 games.
